"The New York Times Book Review The Washington Post Entertainment Weekly The Seattle Times St. Louis Post-Dispatch Bloomberg Businessweek" From the Hardcover edition. In just 10 years, Marianne Breslauers career as a photographer had marked her out as an ambitious photojournalist of the late Weimar Republic, before emigration and the outbreak of war brought Practical Teaching Skills for Driving Instructors : A Training Manual for the ADI Examination and the Check Test download ebook pdf this auspicious beginning to an abrupt halt. Educated from 1927 to 1929 at the renowned Lette-Haus in Berlin, Marianne Breslauer went next to Paris. Her first posting was with Man Ray, who told the 20-year-old that she could do everything already and warmly invited her to make use of his studio. She gladly took up the offer, yet her intrinsic domain remained the street: the quays of the Seine, the Jardin du Luxembourg, the street performers on the Rue dOrleans. These photos attracted the attention of the illustrated German newspapers, who soon furnished her with commissions. She photographed everyone who was anyone in the art world of late-1920s-Berlin, travelled to Spain with Annemarie Schwarzenbach, and portrayed Erika Manns cabaret, "The Pepper Mill", in Zurich. With an infallible intuition for atmosphere and compositional ingenuity, she captured the essence of life in an era coming to a close. In 1936 she had to emigrate from Germany, taking all her photography materials in her bag.

Discover Your Inner Economist : Use Incentives to Fall in Love, Survive Your Next Meeting, and Motivate Your Dentist

Description

One of America's most respected economists presents a quirky, incisive romp through everyday life that reveals how you can turn economic reasoning to your advantage--often when you least expect it to be relevant.Like no other economist, Tyler Cowen shows how economic notions--such as incentives, signals, and markets--apply far more widely than merely to the decisions of social planners, governments, and big business. What does economic theory say about ordering from a menu? Or attracting the right mate? Or controlling people who talk too much in meetings? Or dealing with your dentist? With a wryly amusing voice, in chapters such as "How to Control the World, The Basics" and "How to Control the World, Knowing When to Stop" Cowen reveals the hidden economic patterns behind everyday situations so you can get more of what you really want. Readers will also gain less selfish insights into how to be a good partner, neighbor and even citizen of the world. For instance, what is the best way to give to charity? The chapter title "How to Save the World--More Christmas Presents Won't Help" makes a point that is every bit as personal as it is global. Incentives are at the core of an economic approach to the world, but they don't just come in cash. In fact, money can be a disincentive. Cowen shows why, for example, it doesn't work to pay your kids to do the dishes. Other kinds of incentives--like making sure family members know they will be admired if they respect you--can work. Another non-monetary incentive? Try having everyone stand up in your next meeting if you don't want anyone to drone on. Deeply felt incentives like pride in one's work or a passing smile from a loved one, can be the most powerful of all, even while they operate alongside more mundane rewards such as money and free food. Discover Your Inner Economist is an introduction to the science of economics that shows it to be built on notions that are already within all of us. While the implications of those ideas lead to Cowen's often counterintuitive advice, their wisdom is presented in ordinary examples taken from home life, work life, and even vacation life... How do you get a good guide in a Moroccan bazaar?

J P White: All Good Water

All Good Water

Description

Before heaven will suffice, I go listening for a word, Its oily meat, its newborn orbit. Come with me, now. --From "Inside Hell's Kitchen" As the son of a sailor who grew up on Lake Erie, J.P. White is given to sudden violent storms and rough water that test and shape a man's grasp on the living. No matter how far his poems travel--Russia, Bermuda, Italy, the Dominican Republic, Germany, Mexico, France, New York City, Africa--water is never far from the elemental current that feeds them. As such, his poems are brightly lit with a searching out of islands, distant cities, and those thin places where the truth of our wounds and our wonder shine through. The new poems in All Good Water speak convincingly about the death of friends and family, the renewal of marriage, lost shoes, abandoned children, and failed boats, as well as larger troubles in the torn fabric of America and our historic obsessions with expansion and blood purity. In the last thirty-five years, J.P. White has published essays, articles, fiction, reviews, interviews, and poetry in over a hundred publications, including The Nation, The New Republic, the Los Angeles Times Magazine, The Gettysburg Review, The American Poetry Review, and Poetry. He is a graduate of New College in Sarasota, Florida; Colorado State University; and the Vermont College of Fine Arts. He is the author of four books of poems and the novel Every Boat Turns South.

Infinitesimal: How a Dangerous Mathematical Theory Shaped the Modern World

Description

On August 10, 1632, five leading Jesuits convened in a sombre Roman palazzo to pass judgment on a simple idea: that a continuous line is composed of distinct and limitlessly tiny parts. The doctrine would become the foundation of calculus, but on that fateful day the judges ruled that it was forbidden. With the stroke of a pen they set off a war for the soul of the modern world. Amir Alexander takes us from the bloody religious strife of the sixteenth century to the battlefields of the English civil war and the fierce confrontations between leading thinkers like Galileo and Hobbes. The legitimacy of popes and kings, as well as our modern beliefs in human liberty and progressive science, hung in the balance; the answer hinged on the infinitesimal. Pulsing with drama and excitement, Infinitesimal will forever change the way you look at a simple line.

Leon Battista Alberti,MR Martin Kemp,Cecil Grayson: On Painting

On Painting

Description

Artist, architect, poet and philosopher, Leon Battista Alberti revolutionized the history of art with his theories of perspective in On Painting (1435). Inspired by the order and beauty inherent in nature, his groundbreaking work sets out the principles of distance, dimension and proportion; instructs the painter on how to use the rules of composition, representation, light and colour to create work that is graceful and pleasing to the eye; and stipulates the moral and artistic pre-requisites of the successful painter. On Painting had an immediate and profound influence on Italian Renaissance artists including Ghiberti, Fra Angelico and Veneziano and on later figures such as Leonardo da Vinci, and remains a compelling theory of art.

The New Authority: Family, School, and Community

Description

Haim Omer builds on his previous work to present a model of authority for parents, teachers and community workers that is suitable for today's free and pluralistic societies. This new authority contrasts with traditional authority in that it emphasizes self-control and persistence over control of the child, a network of support over a strict hierarchy, taking mutual responsibility for escalations over holding the child solely responsible, patience over threats, non-violent resistance over physical force, and transparency over secrecy. In addition to a thorough discussion of the underlying theory, The New Authority presents a practical program for families, schools and communities. Dr Omer provides specific instructions to combat violence and risky behavior at home and in school, increase parent and teacher interest and support, and implement interventions that increase safety, improve atmosphere and generate community cohesiveness.

Draw Me a Star

Description

Draw Me a Star is a colourful and entertaining picture book from Eric Carle, author-illustrator of The Very Hungry Caterpillar, that teaches children about drawing and creativity. In this colourful and imaginative story about drawing, children are introduced to one of the essential creative activities of early childhood. Eric Carle is an award-winning and bestselling author-illustrator of books for very young children. His most famous book The Very Hungry Caterpillar has sold over 33 million copies worldwide and has been translated into over 50 different languages; several enhanced editions of The Very Hungry Caterpillar are available from Puffin.

In the summer of 1967, not long after the Six Day War, three young Palestinian men ventured into the town of Ramla in Israel. They were cousins, on a pilgrimage to see their childhood homes, from which they and their families had been driven out nearly twenty years earlier. One cousin had the door slammed in his face, one found that his old house had been converted into a school. But the third, Bashir, was met Draw Me a Star free epub at the door by a young woman named Dalia, who invited him in...This poignant encounter is the starting point for the story of two families - one Arab, one Jewish - which spans the fraught modern history of the region. In the lemon tree his father planted in the backyard of his childhood home, Bashir sees a symbol of occupation; Dalia, who arrived in 1948 as an infant with her family, as a fugitive from Bulgaria, sees hope for a people devastated by the Holocaust. Both are inevitably swept up in the fates of their people and the stories of their lives form a microcosm of more than half a century of Israeli-Palestinian history. What began as a simple meeting between two young people grew into a dialogue lasting four decades.

The Children Who Fought Hitler: A British Outpost in Europe

Description

Few people know that Ypres, centre of First World War remembrance, was once home to a thriving British community that played a heroic role in the Second World War. This expatriate outpost grew around the British ex-servicemen who cared for the war memorials and cemeteries of 'Flanders Fields'. Many married local women and their children grew up multi-lingual, but attended their own school and were intensely proud to be British. When Germany invaded in 1940 the community was threatened: some children managed to escape, others were not so lucky. But, armed with their linguistic skills and local knowledge, pupils of the British Memorial School were uniquely prepared to fight Hitler in occupied territory and from Britain. Still in their teens, some risked capture, torture and death in intelligence and resistance operations in the field. An exceptional patriotism spurred them on to feats of bravery in this new conflict. Whilst their peers at home were being evacuated to the English countryside, these children were directly exposed to danger in one of the major theatres of war. James Fox was a pupil at the British Memorial School in 1940 and he has made it his mission to trace his former school friends. The Children Who Fought Hitler is their story: a war story about people from an unusual community, told from a fresh and human perspective. Gardens of Stone: My Boyhood in the French Resistance, published recently by Hodder & Stoughton, tells the story of one of James's former school friends, Stephen Grady, and his role in the French Resistance.

Blossoming from a correspondence between Luce Irigaray and Michael Marder, Through Vegetal Being is an intense personal, philosophical, and political meditation on the significance of the vegetal for our lives, our ways of thinking, and our relations with human and nonhuman beings. The vegetal world has the potential to rescue our planet and our species and offers us a way to abandon past metaphysics without falling into nihilism. Luce Irigaray has argued in her philosophical work that living and coexisting are deficient unless we recognize sexuate difference as a crucial dimension of our existence. Michael Marder believes the same is true for vegetal difference. Irigaray and Marder consider how plants contribute The Children Who Fought Hitler: A British Outpost in Europe download ebook pdf to human development by sustaining our breathing, nourishing our senses, and keeping our bodies and minds alive. They note the importance of returning to ancient Greek tradition and engaging with Eastern teachings to revive a culture closer to nature. As a result, we can reestablish roots when we are displaced and recover the vital energy we need to improve our sensibility and relation to others.

Archie Brown: The Rise and Fall of Communism

The Rise and Fall of Communism

Description

Winner of the 2010 W.J.M. Mackenzie Prize for Best Political Science Book of the Year 2010 The relentless rise of Communism was the most momentous political development of the first half of the twentieth century. No political change has been more fundamental than its demise in Europe and its decline elsewhere. In this hugely acclaimed book Archie Brown provides an indispensable history that examines the origins of the ideology, its development in different countries, its collapse in many states following the Soviet perestroika, and its current incarnations around the globe. The Rise and Fall of Communism explains how and why Communists came to power; how they were able, in a variety of countries on different continents to hold on to power for so long; and what brought about the downfall of so many Communist systems. A groundbreaking work from an internationally renowned specialist, this is the definitive study of the most remarkable political and human story of our times.

With the rise of Hitler, however, Bonhoeffer's journey took yet another turn. The German church was Nazified, along with every other state-sponsored institution. But it was the Nuremberg laws that set Bonhoeffer's earthly An Angel Spoke to Me: True Stories of Messages from Heaven ebook pdf life on an ineluctable path toward destruction. His denunciation of the race statutes as heresy and his insistence on the church's moral obligation to defend all victims of state violence, regardless of race or religion, alienated him from what would become the Reich church and even some fellow resistors. Soon the twenty-seven-year-old pastor was one of the most conspicuous dissidents in Germany. He would carry on subverting the regime and bearing Christian witness, whether in the pastorate he assumed in London, the Pomeranian monastery he established to train dissenting ministers, or in the worldwide ecumenical movement. Increasingly, though, Bonhoeffer would find himself a voice crying in the wilderness, until, finally, he understood that true moral responsibility obliged him to commit treason, for which he would pay with his life.
